Scouting Report: Upper Mississippi
As the carp are on the spawn in Lake Michigan (and from all reports the fishing is en feugo!) I am on the other side of Wisconsin in sweltering heat scouting water on the Mississippi with my wife and kid. Put the boat in near some backwaters and decided to go get lost in the maze of flats and channels. This should be some prime carp water. It has everything, slow moving sand and grass flats, areas with current that look like mini rivers with sand flats falling off into 8 foot deep holes, and some marshy areas to boot.
The downside of our scouting trip was it was a 90/90 day. 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity. We were breaking a sweat just rigging the rods. Had to take numerous swim breaks (which the kid loved!) and guzzle water. The carp had much more sense and were holding deep in the cloudy water, not easily catchable and we blew our shot at a couple fish we could actually see.
The neat thing was the plan B fish. Gar were visible and sunning themselves in pretty much every shin to waist deep flat. Actually managed to land one on a Clouser Swimming Nymph.
There will be more exploratory done out there soon, this water is awesome!
