Ugh! Another Great Lakes Skunk
I have been putting this off for a week now. My staff, my family and I headed up to the Michigan side of the Great Lakes for a much needed vacation, and a chance to chase some carp on the flats. But despite some cheery weather predictions, water temps hovering just below 70 degrees, and optimisim from the group, the fish never showed.
Just how devoid of fish was it? One of my guides and I rowed out to about 20 feet of water (Lake Michigan is clear enough to see bottom still at this depth) to see if they were holding deep, and we still only saw 6 carp total.
This has been a strange year overall for warm water species in the Upper Mid West.
But, after taking my kid to hockey camp yesterday, my wife and I went fishing in a little community park that has a creek flowing through it, and saw a couple pods of carp in there! So I may have finally found some fish to throw a fly at this season. If only I had the pods of fish that John Montana is seeing...
