Cool weather carp fishing
I have been out 'fishing' again the past couple of days (I say fishing as all my trips this year have turned into scouting trips.  Locally conditions have been terrible this summer).  Found a few flats to check out next season when the waters actually warm up and fish feed consistently.
But this time of year the leaves are starting to change, and water temperatures will start to dip.  Where am I looking for fish right now?
The simple answer is that I am looking for the warmest water possible.  Streams are fairly stable water temperature wise, so those are relatively simple, find the lesser flows and flats that receive sun all day long.
Lakes are a bit of a different story.  Lakes warm and cool depending on depth.  Search out the shallowest water lakes possible as carp are stimulated by daylight and the warmer water temperatures of shallow water.  In deep lakes they tend to head to deeper, more temperature stable water, and sulk.
When you find the shallow and sunny spots, you probably do not have to get out there until just after noon.  The peak water temperatures during the day start at around one p.m. normally and fish will feed when the temperature has reached its maximum.
Remember that most carp food is starting to become less active as we head into fall.  Use smaller and more subtle patterns, and cast them well ahead of feeding fish and give them tiny twitches.  Carp do not seem to be too aggressive this time of year and will not chase down flies with the gusto they did in the dog days of summer.
Good fishing as we head into fall!
